Introduction
Novell Storage Manager (NSM) is an innovative file-system management tool set for the eDirectory and Active Directory* platforms. NSM makes it easy to keep up with a busy, large-scale organizations storage needs. As events occur in the Directory, they trigger NSM to automatically create, manage and delete disk storage.
This allows any existing user provisioning application, such as any LDAP application or Identity Management (IDM) driver, to drive load balanced file system creation, management, and cleanup without modification. NSM provides a new .NET based policy management application to provide maximum flexibility: administrators can modify policies to create and delete file systems, apply quotas, set trustee assignments and do much more, all from the convenience of the nearest Windows workstation. NSM Engineering is also working in conjunction with the Mono Project to provide cross-platform management access to NSM.
Ideal for data migration, NSM ensures that if users move in the directory, their data automatically follows them. It also reduces storage costs by automating file-system cleanup. As users leave the network, NSM; can either delete their stored data immediately, defer deletion for a specified time period, or vault the stored data to another location for a period of time or indefinately. On NetWare It supports most popular namespaces-including Long, Macintosh and UNIX namespaces-and also ensures load balancing across traditional NetWare volumes and volumes based on Novell Storage Services and Novell Cluster Services, and NTFS on Microsoft Windows Active Directory.
